Chapter 4
The procedure went smoothly.[]
But when I saw that tiny, undeveloped life-[]
I broke down.]
The doctor let out a soft sigh.]
“Took six rounds of IVF to get this one. Such a shame.“[]
“And last time, it was because you took a contraindicated medication.“[]
“That’s what caused the miscarriage.”
“If you lose another one, I’m afraid it’ll be near impossible to get pregnant again.“]
I swallowed hard.]]
“What… what medication?“] what…
“I thought it was because I ate ice cream?”
He frowned.
“Ice cream? Come on, how much would you even have to eat for that to happen?”
“No, this was a medication issue. Didn’t Damien tell you?”
Of course he didn’t.
I blamed myself for weeks.
Convinced it was the damn ice cream.]
I slapped myself every night.
Cursed myself for being weak.]
For having no self–control.
Damien knew the truth.
And he let me suffer.
Every single day.
He was the one who kept my meds.
The one who prepped the pills and water, made sure I took them.]
My whole world went silent
1 never imagined–0
That the man I loved with my life could do something like that.
I stared at the ceiling, numb
Then Damien’s custom ringtone went off
“Hey, Giselle? Where are you? You’re not at home.“)
“1ll be back soon,” I croaked []
He caught the strain in my voice!]
You okay? Want me to come get you?”
Chapter 4
“You’re pregnant–you’ve got to be careful.“]
The fake concern in his voice made me laugh.]
A cold, bitter laugh.]
Damien, my safety has nothing to do with you anymore.]]
I dragged my aching body home.[]
Damien was actually there.]
He rushed over when he saw how pale I looked.]
“Giselle, what happened? Are you alright?“[]
I looked at the sweat on his brow.
But I couldn’t tell what was real and what was fake anymore.[]
s–0
All I knew was-
n’t love him.
I didn’t
Not even a little.
My flight was in three days.]
I started shredding every photo of us.
Uprooted every plant we’d ever grown together.[]
Donated every gift he ever gave me to a charity.[]
He never noticed.]
He started coming home on time.[]
Cooking for me.
Trying to make me laugh.
Trying to act like he cared.
But still–1
He didn’t see it
Didn’t see that I was already halfway out the door.
That’s how fake his love was.
The morning of my flight
Damien made a full breakfast spread before work.]
He hugged me and said.
Today’s the day we open our Valentine’s gifts, remember?
“Let’s do it when I get home.“]
I was surprised he even remembered![]
But from now on, it’s just you
Just you
No more us
After he left
Chapter 4
I forwarded every single message Bianca had sent me over the past month.]
Then I tossed my SIM card into the trash.]
Grabbed my bags and passport.[]
Headed for the airport.
Halfway through his drive, Damien felt something was off.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the gift I gave him.]
Red light up ahead-[]
He made a U–turn and raced back home.
“GISELLE!”
He shouted my name.]]
But the house was silent.
The gift box was sitting right in the middle of the living room.]
A cold sweat broke out on his neck.
He ran over and tore it open.[]
Inside-
The divorce papers.]]
And that box of pills.
The ones he switched
The ones that made me lose my baby and go through
